Coupling two existing mature technologies

The European Nuclear Cogeneration Industrial Initiative (NC2I) and the US Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP) Industrial Alliance have been working together since 2014 on the design and regulatory framework of the first modern commercial High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR).
In September 2017, they launched the GEMINI+ project with an international consortium to demonstrate high temperature nuclear cogeneration with HTGR technology.

An international agreement

The initiative provides the means to combine the best engineering talents, knowledge and experience from Europe and the US, and reduce the costs of design and licensing.

An industrial application

With nuclear cogeneration an HTGR plant can be co-located in new or existing industrial facilities to produce electricity, process heat and steam, replacing fossils fuels.

A safe technology

With its unique design, HTGRs are intrinsically safe. They require no emergency power sources, cooling water or operator intervention to prevent core damage and significant radioactivity release.

An EU project

The European Horizon 2020 GEMINI+ project was launched in September 2017 with the aim to validate the design of a HTGR nuclear cogeneration system that supplies steam to industry.

The GEMINI Initiative

GEMINI is a transatlantic partnership for which Europe and the US are mutualising their resources and efforts to accelerate the development of HTGRs.

Two main partners

Nuclear Cogeneration Industrial Initiative (NC2I)

Established in 2011 as one of the three pillars of the European Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform (SNETP), the European Nuclear Cogeneration Industrial Initiative (NC2I) aims to demonstrate an innovative and competitive energy solution for the low-carbon generation of heat and electricity produced by nuclear energy. NC2I counts 9 members: AGH University, AREVA, Centrum vyzkumu Rez (CVR), Fortum, JRC, NCBJ, NRG,  Preussen Elektra and Prochem.

NGNP Industry Alliance

Created in response to the 2005 US Energy Policy Act, the Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP) Industry Alliance is an international consortium promoting the development of a commercial HTGR technology. It gathers industry-leading members including potential end-users, nuclear operators, industrial suppliers and nuclear technology companies: AREVA, Dow Chemical Company, Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada, Westinghouse Electric Company…
